Weymouth Skatepark Association

Weymouth Skatepark Association is an outdoor extreme sports skatepark. Open to young people and adults, they provide a facility that encourages people to partake in creative extreme sports in the form of skateboarding, scooting, bmx and inline skate as well as providing an indoor community area for socialising. Their facility is also open to the wider community for free taster sessions. This includes local Cubs and Scouts groups as well as schools and different ability groups.

Weymouth Skatepark Association has a strong local community base that is supportive to each other in all aspects, including keeping active and encouraging each other to excel in their chosen sport. Creative sports are proven to help with mental health issues and this they know to be true through feedback from their customers of all ages.

Weymouth Skatepark Association has regular visits from Dorset Abilities and schools where they offer volunteer positions to D of E students as well as work experience to SEN students from a local school. They offer reward session tickets to schools to encourage and reward good behavior and they support summer school camps by offering free sessions. These  sessions have proven to help with antisocial behavior in the local area.

Weymouth Skatepark Association is situated in an area of high deprivation and so they keep their entry fee at the lowest price they can, £1 an hour. This helps them to cover running costs only, so they rely on funding to help build new ramps. Being outdoors means the maintenance costs are quite high, and so when building new ramp projects they get their customers involved with the design and production, thus giving them ownership and a sense of belonging.

Weymouth Skatepark Association has a sponsorship scheme where they support local riders, which helps to build confidence and self-esteem. These riders are then asked to help younger riders coming into the sport, to make them feel welcome. They encourage them to be good role models to their peers and the younger riders.

Weymouth Skatepark Association is much more than just a skatepark, they are an important community facility that provides a range of wooden skate ramps for all abilities to use together, but most importantly they bring people together to share a common ground and common interests with a built in self support network.
