Disposing of Your Used Car
When your car is beyond repair, the question many people ask is: what do I do with it? Many people simply don’t know what to do with an unwanted car. Whilst most people seek out how to dispose of their car in a safe and environmentally-conscious way, the actions of others has meant car disposal has posed a real problem.
The car you are driving today will be a good source of many recyclable materials tomorrow when it comes time to recycle your ride. In fact, around 95% of a car can be recycled, up from the previously required 85% recycle rate.
Unsurprisingly, achieving such radical improvements isn’t easy, especially when cars are made up of so many types and grades of materials; it requires investment and innovation from makers and recycling firms. The latest developments have saved half a million tonnes a year from landfill, and as a whole, the industry has reduced its landfill waste by 90 per cent since 2000. In fact, so vast are the improvements, once the processes are running at full tilt, only one per cent of cars could be left unrecycled.
Figures from the DVLA show that every year, approximately two million vehicles are taken off the road, yet only 50% of these cars are disposed of in an environmentally-friendly way. All cars donated to Giveacar are disposed of legally to the highest environmental standards.
Environmentally Friendly Used Car Disposal
The legal car disposal process is fairly straightforward, as well as environmentally friendly. Under the Environment Agency Regulations, cars can no longer just be scrapped. They have to be de-polluted in accordance with UK and EU legislation, and 95% of car materials have to be recycled under the European End-of-Life Vehicle Directive. The process of vehicle de-pollution involves two main functions; firstly the recovery of all components and fluids that can be recycled and re-used, and secondly the removal of all elements of a vehicle that are potentially harmful to the environment. All car disposals of cars donated to Giveacar are handled at Authorised Treatment Facilities that recycle a minimum of 88% of the weight of the car.
If you’re worried about car disposal, look no further. Just give Giveacar a call on 020 7736 4242 and we will arrange for your car to be collected free of charge. Not only will you have the peace of mind of knowing your car is being disposed of safely and efficiently – you’ll also be helping your favourite charity.
Though Giveacar has for a long time been solely reliant on the selling of scrap cars to our partners, we have now begun gathering a reputation as a viable organisation to arrange the collection and auction of unwanted cars.
Being the car donation experts, we are able to decipher whether your car should be recycled or if we can auction it to raise even more for your charity. We make this judgement based on our industry knowledge along with the information you provide: your cars make and model, age, mileage, MOT qualifications and its mechanical conditions.

Although a simple process, it’s vital the proper procedures are followed otherwise you might still be liable for your vehicle even after collection.
Why Donate Your Used Car?
Whether you’re making a donation of £5 when watching BBC’s Children in Need or a donation of £500 to your local hospice, the thoughts and feelings remain the same. That rush of euphoria and the contagious smile gets us all, and Giveacar is another opportunity to get your fix of feel good. Look around you and you’ll be surrounded by things which clog up your life and weigh you down, and that old car of yours is another example.
Cars are expensive to maintain, be it the MOT, parking, petrol or simply the expense of energy it sucks from you, they’re a hassle in a world where we can easily get around without them. Rather than trying to squeeze out any value of the car yourself, take the easy and charitable option and donate it with Giveacar. When you submit your car we’ll ask you a series of questions to decipher the best option to raise the most for your nominated charity. We’ll tell you how much will be raised and then pass your details onto our collection partners. It’s a simple and pain-free process, so pick up the phone and give us a call!
Looking for another reason to donate? Had you considered the environmental impact your car has? A study by the University of Oxford and the University of Bath found that air pollution from cars and vans racks up health bills of nearly £6bn every year in the UK and the costs to both the NHS and society at large were highest in cities, with diesel vehicles being the worst offenders in terms of harmful pollutants. These frightening numbers might seem a little more obvious now due to the publicity given to air quality in recent years, but had you considered actually taking action yourself? Giveacar offers you an environmental means of car disposal whilst also allowing you to donate to charity. It’s a win-win.
The Giveacar Scheme. How We Handle Car Disposal?
Giveacar has perfected the art of turning a negative into a positive! That is, your old and unwanted car that’s rusting away, Giveacar will collect it free of charge and donate the proceeds to a charity of your choice. We make disposing of your old car an easy and pain-free process!
Giveacar works with a host of collection operators based all around the UK meaning we can collect cars even in remote locations. It is worth noting that the further away you are from one of our collection operators the lower the offer will be for your car if it is to be scrapped. If your car is to be auctioned then auction house fees will apply, however, cars are run through auction up to three times so we are usually confident of achieving the reserve placed on.
Once you submit your details with us Giveacar we then forward your collection address and vehicle details onto our collection operators. You can expect a call within two working days to arrange the collection of your car which usually takes place within a week. Lastly, once your car is collected you’ll receive a confirmation of the final amount raised within six to eight weeks. Please check your spam as sometimes our confirmation emails end up in there.
Giveacar is a not-for-profit social enterprise and so our sole means of income comes from the administration fee we take from the sale of each car. If your car makes up to £150 we’ll take an admin fee of 25%, and if your car makes anything over £150 we’ll then take an admin fee of 30%. 5% VAT is then added, but then the rest goes to your nominated charity. It’s worth noting that our admin fee keeps us afloat, and so the fee taken from your car goes towards raising even more for other charities.
Please get in touch if you have any further questions. We are always happy to talk things through and make sure you are fully aware of our processes. Call us on 0207 736 4242
