Vegetarian for Life was registed as a charity in August 2007. Our Vision is ‘To improve standards of catering for older vegetarians and vegans throughout the UK’. It was set up as a result of experiences the Vegetarian Housing Association had which led the organisation to believe some support was needed for those involved in the social care sector.
We initially developed a Catering Guide which was distributed, free of charge, to around 15,000 care homes and 2,700 home care agencies. It includes nutritional, ethical and catering advice, as well as a menu planner and recipes. We have added to this the Vegetarian Living handbook which is designed for individuals and perhaps relatives or friends caring for them and also a Nutrition for Older Vegetarians and Vegans booklet which came out of our popular one day Catering Courses.
Our website includes a downloadable copy of the Guide and Handbook, a Recipe Service, useful links and the VfL UK-List, which now has 672 members of vegetarian and vegan friendly establishments for older people which follow our Code of Good Practice.
As well as providing guides and recipes VfL also has a dedicted advisory board so that if an individual has a particular dietary problems such as allergies, health related issues or inability to eat solid food the panel can advise on suitable alternatives.
Finally VfL administers two grants schemes to assist older vegetarians and vegans with independent living and respite care.
