Setpoint London East provides hands-on science, technology and environmental workshops to school age children mainly at the Soanes Centre, located in a 33-acre woodland park (and local nature reserve),the only woodland in the East End of London.
Setpoint London East is a charity that works to support schools and pupils in learning about and engaging with science, engineering and technology. It focuses specifically on hands-on workshops. Through our base in the Soanes Centre in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park (THCP) we have the unique possibility to offer workshops using the park as our out-door classroom. This enables us to give children from the London inner city area the possibility to engage with nature in a way that is new and unusual for most of them. THCP is a 33-acre nature reserve and the only woodland in the whole of East London.
Apart from woodland it also offers meadow and pond habitats.
Our workshop programme is available all year round and has been developed to link closely to the national curriculum. There are detailed descriptions of these courses on our website We teach 7500+ pupils per school year.
The main purpose of these workshops is to raise the standards of achievement in science for pupils who live in some of the most deprived boroughs in London. In more than half of the classes coming to us 50% to 100% pupils speak English as a second language.
Consistently over 95% rate the quality and contents of our workshops as good, with enthusiastic comments like: “Habitat workshop very beneficial which has great links to the science curriculum”, ”Excellent..- encouraged use of lots of scientific language and children learned a lot.”, “very good practical look at classification keys- hard to do at school”.
Teachers often highlight the important impact our workshops have on pupils, as most of their pupils do not have access to nature where they live. They also tell us that their pupils do not move far from home in general, so school trips have become even more important.
