Today, we are experiencing the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War, with close to 60 million people around the world forced to leave their home. That’s one person every two seconds.
Less than 30,000 claim asylum in the UK each year. These people urgently need support to secure the protection and means that they need to live with dignity and build a new life in the UK.
Too many people don’t receive that support. The asylum system in Britain is complex and bewildering and changes in government policy are making life more difficult for people seeking asylum in the UK. As a result many are forced into poverty and unable to access the justice they are entitled to.
