Established in 2006, Precious Sisters is a small UK registered charity dedicated to transforming the lives of young, underprivileged girls from Kenya by giving them access to secondary school education. We recruit sponsors to provide funding for school fees and one-on-one mentoring support. This enables 30 girls each year from impoverished and vulnerable backgrounds to access secondary schooling at five excellent government schools in Nairobi and rural areas, with a view to obtaining government-funded University places. Since 2006 we have sponsored 290 girls who would otherwise have finished their education at the age of 13 or 14, of which 87 are currently in school. Of the 203 girls who have completed school, 96% have gone on to study at University in Kenya. This high success rate is directly attributed to the fact that each girl is not only provided with an education but also supported through a personalised mentoring programme delivered by our local Kenyan team, which facilitates the girls’ often challenging transition into adulthood.
We rely on a range of supporters, who sponsor girls individually. Each sponsorship lasts for four years, and during that time we send back reports of the girls’ progress through school and pass any communication back from sponsors to the girls.
For context, in Kenya, primary school education is free, but the four years of secondary education are not. If families can afford school fees it is the boys who are educated. Girls will be expected to stay at home to undertake household chores, work on the land, or enter domestic service as ‘house girls’ with very poor pay. Typically, they come from homes where the father is not present, and the mother will pursue some form of informal economic activity such as farming or running a market stall. With our help, our sponsored girls have the opportunity to transform their lives and that of their families.
