The Lord’s Taverners is the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity. We break down barriers and empower disadvantaged and disabled young people to fulfil their potential and build life skills.
We create a range of opportunities for young disabled people to engage in sport and recreational activities in their local communities. Our programmes support some of the most marginalised and at-risk young people in the UK.
Young people with a disability are less than half as likely to take part in sport at least once a week than young people without a disability. Additionally, 69% of parents with disabled children have difficulty accessing local services for them, and 90% are worried about cuts to the local services that they need. Furthermore, disabled children are twice as likely to be lonely compared to their non-disabled peers.
For many young people with a disability, loneliness has been identified as a major issue, and opportunities to take part in regular competitive sport can be extremely limited. Therefore the Lord’s Taverners have created a range of programmes offering disabled young people opportunities and helps young people realise their potential. Also, engagement helps to improve participants physical and mental well-being, giving a sense of belonging as they make friends and gain skills for life such as confidence and independence.
Annually our programmes benefit over 2,000 disabled young people across 19 national locations. 88% of all participants said they were able to make new friends because of our programmes. While 94% of participants said they were more active due to the programmes.
In order to ensure we can continue to deliver these vital programmes we require some additional support. Support through donations will truly make a difference to the lives of the disabled young people we help, so thank you.
