Originally founded in 1967 as the Colostomy Welfare Group, the Colostomy Association provides support to thousands of ostomates across the UK. Funded completely by donations and supporters’ fundraising efforts, your financial help is vital and will enable us to continue assisting people of all ages (from birth up to 100+) who undergo this life changing surgery.
Colostomy Association is the only national charity which can offer support to the 65,000+ people who are living with a colostomy in the UK.
One in every 500 people has a stoma and around 16,000 people die of bowel cancer each year. Other reasons for the formation of a colostomy include diverticulitis, incontinence, birth defect, perforated bowel, diverticulitis, child birth complications or car accident. For babies born with rectal problems, a stoma operation saves their life. Some stomas are temporary and can sometimes be reversed – for instance if the bowel has healed adequately.
Importantly, the removal of cancer gives people immense peace of mind and a new lease of life. While incontinence sufferers recover their ability to go out and about without the need to rush to the nearest public toilet.
Our free services include a 24 hour helpline, a range of literature, a quarterly magazine, an informative website, a closed Facebook group and home/hospital visits from a team of dedicated volunteers.
Please help us to continue these invaluable free services which are only made possible through donations to the Colostomy Association.
