Capable Creatures, a user-led Organisation, was set up to help people with mental health conditions. Currently, Capable Creatures holds a monthly peer support dog walk for dog owners/lovers with mental health conditions. They have also just launched their ‘Coins for Minds’ fundraising appeal, to raise £25,000, to develop their ‘Guides for the Mind’ assistance dog training programme and begin to assist people with mental health conditions train their own ‘Guides for the Mind’ assistance dogs.
Capable Creatures was set up by Lise Marron from her own experience and wanting others who are affected by mental health conditions to have the opportunity to train their own ‘Guides for the Mind’ assistance dogs and use dog assisted therapeutic activities as ways to alleviate their disabling symptoms and barriers towards living an independent, fulfilling life..
Lise was harassed from childhood and then assaulted for looking different. She developed mental health conditions and social phobia. In 2010, Lise got a dog. Things changed. Her dog acted as a social lubricant, people focused on the dog, everyone relaxed and social connections formed. She also discovered her dog helped alleviate her disabling symptoms in other ways such as interacting with and bringing her back to the present when experiencing post traumatic stress disorder episodes or by walking by her right side she doesn’t feel anxiety someone will bump her right side, causing electrifying nerve pain due to damage from the assault, enabling her to go out in public.
