Burley-in-Wharfedale Scout & Guide Group are a thriving joint unit providing facilities and activities for 300 young people from the village each week.
More than 300 young people in Burley are part of the Scouts & Guides, but there are more than 100 others are on a waiting list. The Scouts & Guides have been going in the village for 99 years – and now, in time for our centenary, we need your help to keep the tradition going for another century and beyond. Will you please help us raise £500,000 for a new home?
If you’ve had any contact with the Scout & Guide movement, you’ll know what a fantastic opportunity it offers children and young people. They do a huge range of things, from art and craft to camping and sleepovers, from learning life skills to going down Gaping Gill. It’s all about making friends, gaining confidence, learning about the world, and having fun – and if the experiences of thousands of Burley people are anything to go by, it’s a great thing to have in the village.
But the past is catching up with us. The current HQ on Peel Place was built in 1968, and despite the brave efforts that have been made over the years to patch it up, it has seen better days – and it’s too small and outdated for our needs. There’s good news, though. We’ve secured planning permission for a new HQ that will reflect Scouting & Guiding today; will give our young people the space, facilities and safety they need; and that will also be available for other community use – so everyone in the village will benefit.
We’ve already raised over £100,000 towards our target, leaving £400,000 to go. We can’t think of a better way of celebrating our centenary than to get there. With your help, we can do it. On behalf of Burley’s Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Beavers, Rainbows, Explorers and Young Leaders – past, present and future – thank you in anticipation of your generous support.
