Berkeley Vale Riding For The Disabled Group is a small group run by volunteers and is part of the National RDA. Once a week we meet in Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre in Cam, Gloucestershire. Our small operation has been going on for 40 years, recently however we have undergone a change of group name and location in order to maintain our service.
We think horse riding is an important mechanism for individuals with autism and learning disabilities to be outside and enjoy their time. We therefore have individuals of all ages come and join us at Berkley Vale RDA, and take great pride in providing for them.
We aim to deliver the psychical, emotional and social benefits horse riding has to offer our riders. Riders are therefore encouraged to not only achieve their horse riding potential but to also improve on their communication skills and to experience a sense of ‘being in charge’. In offering our riders the opportunity to develop these skills, we offer them the chance of becoming more independent.
Instructors base the sessions on the riders ability rather than their dis-ability – ‘It’s what you can do that counts!’ is our motto. The sessions are therapeutic for all riders and some riders go on to compete at Regional and National level.
Presently, the Berkeley Vale RDA Group operates on a Thursday morning, offering 3 half hour riding sessions with a maximum of 6 riders per session. We hire our horses from Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre and our volunteers arrive half an hour before the first riding session to tack up and groom the horses and to set up equipment in the indoor riding school. Volunteers remain behind to stable and rug up the horses, clear away equipment and ensure the riding school is left in good order. Our group is responsible for the purchase and maintenance of its own equipment, including a variety of riding aids which have been adapted to meet the needs of its riders.
Giveacar and its donors are proud supporters of Berkley Vale RDA as they work hard to offer individuals with autism and learning disabilities the chance to enjoy horse riding whilst developing key skills. If you’re planning to scrap or sell your car, give a car instead to help them continue this service. Do a good deed and help Berkley Vale RDA when you donate your car to charity.
