Assisting Berkshire Children (ABC) to read is a small, local charity which recruits, trains and offer continuing support to community volunteers who provide mentoring help to Berkshire primary school children who are struggling with reading and lack confidence.
There is much evidence to show that this form of support produces a significant improvement in a child’s reading ability and therefore in their life chances. The children we help are not children who have statements and so are not given additional support through the education system but children who benefit from the individual help that an interested adult can give them. The children are chosen by their teachers as those most likely to benefit from this additional support. Although schools contribute towards the costs of recruiting and training and supporting the volunteers and their expenses, the charity still have to find over 70% of the costs of this and we rely on the generous support of individuals and organisations.
