A Partner in Education (APIE) works with both international and Rwandan partners to meet the Sustainable Development Goals of Inclusive and Quality Education. We support the development of excellence in teaching and learning in Rwanda, working with local educators to hone their skills and share their learning in an effective and sustainable way.
Our pilot centre of excellence – Umubano Academy – is fully inclusive, incorporating training for teachers and provision for all students, whatever their background and whatever their educational needs. Our Scholarship Fund ensures that no child who lives within a 30 minute walk of the school is excluded, and our programme for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) enables all children to benefit from the school’s holistic approach to inclusive education. Our core ethos, and overarching focus of the work at Umubano Academy is Education for Peace.
APIE’s innovative EQUIP project enhances the teaching skills and knowledge of pre-primary teachers in Rwanda. With funding from UK Aid Direct, APIE has created and trialed an e-learning course which has been used to train teachers in 200 schools in rural Rwanda over the last 2 years. The course features videos of best practice recorded at Umubano Academy, ensuring that the content is relevant in a Rwandan context. The course covers all 6 areas of the pre-primary curriculum and has been validated by the Rwanda Education Board. At the start of 2021, APIE received further funding from UK Aid Direct to reach even more teachers across Rwanda, equipping them to provide high quality education for children across Rwanda.
APIE is also delivering a groundbreaking Education for Peace project to support Rwandan educators to develop their practice, teaching children to love challenges, learn from mistakes, enjoy effort and develop empathy. We believe that the outcome of this will be a generation of global advocates for peace.
