Bield Housing & Care

HQ Location:
Midlothian

Location of benefit:
UK only (nationwide)

Founded in 1971, Bield is today one of Scotland’s leading providers of housing, care and support services for 15,000 older people and the nation’s largest provider of very sheltered accommodation. We offer varying levels of supported housing, including daycare.
The need to understand and respond positively to an older person’s holistic needs is paramount in Bield’s approach. Although we provide suitable housing for people, we are very conscious that this is not where our services should end and our primary objective is to enable older people to live independent and rewarding lives. Each year, Bield helps over 15,000 older people to live life to the full.
We provide social opportunities and support services thanks in many ways to over 350 volunteers nationwide making the tenant’s lives happier and healthier. They provide a Befriending service which makes tenants feel less isolated and offers one-to-one companionship helping residents remain socially active. The Silver Surfer Project teaches older people computer skills to let them stay in touch with far-flung friends and family and to live more independently.

We also oversee our own Small Grants Programme. We use this money to purchase gardening materials, fund social events or buy Wii Fits to facilitate exercise classes. Funding for these activities really makes the lives of our tenants so much more enjoyable and there are significant benefits for the mental and physical health, independence and general quality of life of all residents across Scotland.
