The Exotic Pet Refuge was formally founded in 1984 by Pam Mansfield and her late husband Mel. It has since grown significantly due to the number, currently well over 300 of mammals, birds and reptiles brought to its door,it has been located on its current 4 acre site since 1996. The animals include monkeys, lynx, otters, lemurs, alligator, snakes, meerkats, owls plus many more. They have six Open Days per year. It costs approx £48,000 a year to run and is staffed by Pam, her family and volunteers. The refuge is very grateful for the goodwill, support and donations from individuals, groups and organisations.

The EPR was born out of necessity and the number of exotics through the refuge's door are increasing. However, its role is wider to work with society, schools, and the gerneral public, educating them about the work carried out  and  that exotics are not like domestic pets, focusing also on conservation, ecology and animal care.
