Book Aid International
In sub-Saharan Africa today there are 153 million people unable to read or write. This means they are unable to read a medicine bottle, text book, instruction manual or ballot paper; they are effectively excluded from taking control of their lives and their futures. Poverty and illiteracy go hand in hand. Books are a luxury that very few people in sub-Saharan Africa can afford and yet without books, literacy is extremely hard to achieve and maintain.
Every year, Book Aid International provides approximately half a million books and other reading materials to people in sub-Saharan Africa and the occupied territories of Palestine. Almost two-thirds of these are books for children. Our proposition is simple - £2 enables us to source, select and transport a book to the developing world.
We recognise book provision is often not enough, so we also provide support for those who are fortunate enough to access the books we send. Training for teachers and librarians, creating bespoke Children’s Corners and improving infrastructure through the refurbishment of library areas are just three ways in which we aim to increase the longevity of our work.
