BASIK
BASIK, (Build A School In Kenya), was established in 2006 by the Normington family after visiting Kenya. We saw the poverty in a rural area near Mombasa where a wonderful man, Julius Nzai, was teaching in a hut. Now there are six classrooms, a water supply, 4 teachers and nearly 200 children, several of whom are orphans. Work is now starting on a garden to provide food and to be an educational resource. We returned in 2007, but since then we recieve regular updates by e-mail, (the head cycles 20 miles in to Mombasa to use the internet), and via the photographs. Our next project has already been sourced for us, by Matt Band, (Community Dev. Officer at Bradford City F. C.), who visited Kenya earlier this year. A 'school', in the slums of Mombasa. We aim to build schools wherever they are needed, whilst maintaining support for established projects. EVERY penny raised is sent to Kenya, direct to the project via Western Union avoiding the inevitable possibility of corruption. The charity is run from our home and all overheads are covered by the family. The problems of Africa are vast, it's easy to be overwhelmed or sceptical and do nothing OR you can help us do SOMETHING. Thank you.
