All Hands Volunteers

HQ Location:
London

Location of benefit:
Worldwide (including UK)

All Hands Volunteers is an international non-profit organisation which provides hands-on assistance to survivors of natural disasters around the world.
By supporting volunteers with housing, meals, tools, and organised work at no charge we provide free and effective response services to communities in need.
We try to come in quickly after a natural disaster hits, but after the search and rescue phase, filling gaps left by governmental and non-governmental agencies in clean-up, community recovery and reconstruction projects.
Typical project activities include:

  •   Clearing rubble and debris from home sites
  •   Building sanitation and clean water facilities
  •   Helping distribute food and aid packages
  •   Erecting temporary shelters and building schools
  •   Working with communities and schools to develop ‘safe play’ sites for local children
  •   Providing the specialist expertise our volunteers often bring (e.g. medical, construction)

Japan Tsunami Response: Project Tohoku
We recently launched a new project in response to the Japanese tsunami. After extensive discussion and assessment, we have been asked to provide support to local government in the communities of Ofunato and Rikuzentakata.
It is unclear at this early stage what the scope and scale of the project will be but we have established a working office and living accommodation within government buildings. We have around a dozen advance volunteers in place whose role is focussed on aid distribution and logistics at this stage and we hope to expand to a full international volunteer response project in due course.
