Afghan Action
Afghan Action runs a Training & Business Incubation Centre in Kabul,Afghanistan, where young men and women learn how to weave beautiful, handmade carpets. We are now diversifying into other products and a programme to train 50 people to sew and make clothes begins in June 2011. We are also introducing the latest ICT “virtual” systems into Afghan schools and supporting links between schools in Hammersmith and Kabul and Harpenden and Mazar.
In Kabul, Afghan Action has trained over 450 young men and women since
September 2005. Staff and trainees also benefit from classes in literacy and
numeracy, on-site healthcare and a nourishing midday meal. We have supplied
carpets for Habitat and John Lewis as well as holding events across the country to promote the work and sell carpets. There are currently 60 people on site. We are developing our training programme in Kabul to include ICT, English and business skills and plan to expand onto new sites elsewhere in Afghanistan in the next two years.
In the UK, Afghan Action's awareness raising programme – targeting schools, faith groups, businesses and the media - runs across the country and we also work specifically with Afghan groups to support and strengthen them.
