The 25th April 2016 marked the one-year anniversary of the devastating Earthquake that hit Nepal where thousands were killed and millions of people across Nepal were left homeless, including more than 1,100 Gurkha veterans and widows.

Installing the Well

Giveacar teamed up with The Gurkha Welfare Trust in 2015 in order to rasie vital funds to be able to assist them to help the earthquake victims in remote areas across Nepal. Their aid includes providing medical care, distributing emergency supplies and constructing temporary shelters.

Installing the Well

Over the past year, Giveacar have been asking the public to donate their old or unwanted vehicles to the Earthquake Response Fund and we are pleased to report that cars were donated through to us in abundance!

Through scrapping or auction cars from across the UK, over the past year, Giveacar managed to raise over £9,000.00 for The Gurkha Welfare Trust, which is fantastic. The money raised through the initiative is enough to purchase well over 100 smokeless stoves for those who lost their homes in last year’s earthquakes.

Installing the Well

Sourced through a local Nepalese supplier, the smokeless stoves make a huge difference in day-to-day life and, most importantly, health of our Gurkha veterans and their families. Doma, the wife of Gurkha veteran Dharamsing Tamang, is pictured using hers in the newly built quake-proof house her and her husband now reside in.

As well as this, some of the money we raised through the Earthquake Appeal, has contributed to help rebuild Gurkha’s lives in other ways.

The first home that The Gurkha Welfare Trust rebuilt belonged to Rifleman Dharamsing Tamang, ex-1st/7th Gurkha Rifles. Dharamsing was at home in his rented room when the earthquake hit on 25th April. In the week following, Dharamsing and his wife Doma slept in a local monastery but then, as the second earthquake struck, Dharamsing fell and injured himself on the forehead while escaping to safety. It was then that one of The Gurkha Welfare Trust's Area Welfare Officers found the couple, they were sleeping under plastic next to a pigsty, they then helped them to set up a temporary shelter.

Installing the Well

It is here that Dharamsing Tamang ex-1/7 GR and his wife, Doma, greet the camera with a Namaste on the day of their move-in to their new home in Jiri of Dolakha District, East Nepal (one of the more seriously affected areas by the earthquakes of April and May 2015). Dharamsing and his wife are the first welfare pensioners to move in to an earthquake-resistant house designed by the technical team of the Earthquake Response Team (EQRT) of GWS. The house was built to its specifications, solely through the funding and assistance of GWS.

A huge thank you to all those who donated their old or unwanted cars to The Gurkha Welfare Trust Earthquake Appeal. The money raised has gone to excellent sources and has helped many get back on the road to recovery.

Cars can still be donated to The Gurkha Welfare Trust Earthquake Fund as help is still desperately needed. You can donate here or call Giveacar on 0207 736 4242.

The Trust estimates that £22 million will be needed over the coming years in order to provide the support needed to rebuild the lives of Gurkha veterans, their families and communities. So if you’ve recently got a new car or have a car which you no longer require, please consider donating it through Giveacar, who will pick it up and donate the money on your behalf and at no cost to you.

Today marks the day of Earth Day , which is a day to celebrate the planet and all the wonderful natural things that it’s made up of.

Coffee Morning

Earth Day first began in 1970, making this year its 46th year anniversary. It began in order to encourage people to be more environmentally friendly. It’s supported across the world including a string of celebrities such as Emma Watson and Leonardo Di Caprio.

Earth day is a chance for people to do various activities related to putting good back into the Earth. These activities can include planting trees, reducing the amount of energy you consume – so making sure those unused lights are switched off – and of course recycling and raising awareness about recycling!

So today is the perfect day to recycle your old car through Giveacar or at the very least raise awareness about Giveacar as an environmentally friendly way to recycle your old car!

Here at Giveacar we recycle old or unwanted cars in an environmentally friendly way and then the money raised from your old car goes to a charity of your choice. It’s as simple as 1, 2, 3…. And of course you are helping the environment. As well as this you could donate the proceeds to one of our environmentally friendly charities, you can view our list of charities here.

Coffee Morning

We have all sorts of environmentally friendly charities available on our website, anything from tiny bugs to big Tree’s being planted in cities.

So if you want to contribute to the Earth this Earth Day and donate your old car all you have to do is call us on 0207 736 4242 Or you can donate online by filling in this form online

Thank you for the support and Happy Earth Day!

Over the last 12 months British Heart Foundation have been a feature charity with Giveacar. It has been a great success, the partnership helped raise awareness about the great work that they do at British Heart Foundation and the general work of Giveacar.

Coffee Morning

Not only has the partnership been great for raising awareness, but there has been a real increase in car donations, which is fantastic. Since British Heart Foundation became a feature charity, an amazing £17,079.94 was raised through the donation of 250 cars!

It’s always really rewarding to hear what the money raised through Giveacar has been able to do for the charity, and how working together can really help such organisations.

James Hails, Head of Corporate Partnerships at the BHF said; “The BHF is the largest independent funder of heart research in the UK. Receiving no government funding, we are reliant on the generous support of organisations like Giveacar and their customers. Through our partnership as a featured charity, Giveacar has raised over £17,000 for our life saving research. All the funds raised through our partnership will make such a difference to the millions of people living with heart and circulatory conditions. We would like to say a huge thank you to all Giveacar customers who chose the BHF as their charity to benefit through this amazing initiative.”

Coffee Morning

British Heart Foundation first registered with Giveacar in 2012 and since then, we have raised a total of £51,750.88 through 599 cars, making British Heart Foundation Giveacar’s 4th most donated to charity.

Even though British Heart Foundation are no longer a feature charity, you can of course still donate your old or unwanted car to them. You can donate your old car by calling Giveacar directly on 0207 736 4242 or by filling in a form online.

Get down to The Prince of Wales this Sunday to support Brixton Soup Kitchen's Christmas Showcase & Party Fundraiser.

Brixton Soup Kitchen are raising funds for their Hats, Scarves and Sleeping Bags outreach campaign this winter. They are hosting their Christmas Showcase and Party Fundraiser in The Prince of Wales, from 7pm – 1am.

The Brixton Soup Kitchen Team

Event Information

They will have some very special guests performing such as Rough Copy and Randy Valentine plus many more. Later on they will have various guest DJs to go into the night. Throughout the evening there will also be secret Miss Santa, Give-a-ways, Christmas Hamper raffles and much more on the night.

Brixton Soup Kitchen is a grassroots organisation helping homeless people and Londoners in need since 2013. They provide support and company, with no obligation attached, for those who need it most; serving food and hot drinks to up to 50 people a day. As well as providing food, through support and help with CV’s they have helped four people get back into full time employment. Brixton Soup Kitchen’s aim is to empower people in a warm and friendly environment.

As part of their work, Brixton Soup Kitchen do night outreach 4 times a week, where they hand out food to those that need it most across London. However, being able to do this is tricky. They have to hire a car, which costs a lot of money, and the food they provide can end up cold as they travel all across London, sometimes further; reaching areas such as Ilford and even Brighton.

Having an outreach van specifically designed to keep food warm, and enabling them to be able to travel across London at a cheaper rate would make a huge difference to the Brixton Soup Kitchen.

Giveacar is excited to announce that our new feature charity is The Stroke Association.

The Stroke Association

The Stroke Association has been a registered charity with us since the very beginning, so we felt that it was about time to raise awareness of the amazing work The Stroke Association do by making them one of our feature charities.

The Stroke Association

Every year there are approximately 152,000 strokes in the UK. That's one stroke every three and a half minutes. Most people affected are over 65, but anyone can have a stroke, including children and even babies. Due to improvements to stroke care over the years, statistics now show you are twice more likely to survive a stroke than 20 years ago. However, the reality remains that stroke is the UK’s third biggest killer. These figures are quite shocking, however, The Stroke Association believe in life after stroke and that together we can conquer stroke.

By working with people who share this commitment; stroke survivors and their families, researchers and medics, and all their supporters – including Giveacar! - The Stroke Association can continue their work in trying to conquer stroke.

BSK Logo

Giveacar have teamed up with Brixton Soup Kitchen, a brilliant homeless charity who are registered with Giveacar, in order to try and raise enough money to buy them an outreach van.

Coffee Morning

Both Giveacar and Brixton Soup Kitchen were handing out free tea and coffee in personalised take away cups to let the early commuters know about the project and encourage them to spread the word about the partnership.

Coffee Morning

Along with free coffee and tea, there were also doughnuts kindly donated from Greggs, and some amazing personalised biscuits, beautifully designed with both Giveacar and Brixton Soup Kitchen’s information, generously created and donated from Bespoke Biscuit Company

Free Doughnuts

Free Biscuits

Brixton Soup Kitchen are a grassroots organisation helping homeless people and Londoners in need since 2013. They provide support and company for those who need it most; serving food and hot drinks to up to 70 a day as well as having helped four people get back into full time employment.

BSK Gang

Brixton Soup Kitchen have teamed up with Giveacar to raise enough money to be able to purchase an outreach van. The van will enable the outreach team to deliver basic necessities to those that need it most across London, and further afield.

Tea and coffee were handed out for the entire morning to anyone passing by, helping themselves to biscuits and doughnuts too! There were even a few homeless people who stayed and spoke to Solomon Smith, the co-founder of the Brixton Soup Kitchen who informed them of their work.

Coffee

Overall it was a great success, tea and coffee was had by all and hopefully more people now know about Giveacar and Brixton Soup Kitchen.

To date Giveacar have raised a staggering £3,355.12 for Brixton Soup Kitchen, which is fantastic! If you want to read more about the project just click here.

You can donate your old car to help reach the target for Brixton Soup Kitchen’s new outreach van by filling in the form online or you can call Giveacar directly on 0207 736 4242.

In 2015 The Chibozu Community Trust registered with us at Giveacar.

The Chibozu Community Trust

The Chibozu Community Trust are a small charity who work to improve local education, healthcare, and the environment in Zambia, Africa. The charity was Founded by Milden and Catherine Choongo in 2009 and The Chibozu Community Trust's activities are based around the rural village of Simooya in the Choma District of Zambia.

The Chibozu Community Trust is a small charity that relies on donations in order for them to continue the great work that they do. Donations through Giveacar, by scrapping and auctioning cars from across the UK have made a real impact on what The Chibozu Community Trust have managed to achieve.

The Chibozu Community Trust

Since registering with us, Giveacar have managed to raise £1,000.00 for The Chibozu Community Trust, which is a huge amount. Milden and Catherine Choonog, and us at Giveacar thank all those who donated their old cars to The Chibozu Community Trust. Milden got in touch to inform us what this money has been able to do for them.

The entire £1,000.00 from the donated cars was put straight into installing a water bore at the village school, enabling the children to have clean, constant water which is “a dream come true”

Here are some photos of the water bore being installed, thanks to all those car donations!

A new month and a new featured charity!

Giveacar have teamed up with Barnardo’s, our new featured charity, and together we shall be doing lots of exciting things to raise awareness of our partnership and the great work that the charity does.

Barnardo's

Barnardo’s started working with Giveacar in 2012 and so far we have raised an incredible £10,362.00 for them. We felt that it was about time to promote the amazing work they do for vulnerable children.

As one of the UK's leading children's charities, Barnardo's works directly with over 200,000 children, young people and their families every year. Barnardo’s runs over 900 vital services across the UK, including counselling for children who have been abused, fostering and adoption services, vocational training and disability inclusion groups. Barnardo’s believes in children regardless of their circumstances, gender, race, disability or behaviour. Their purpose as a charity today is to transform the lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children.

Barnardo’s was founded in 1867 by Dr Thomas Barnardo, after witnessing young children sleeping in gutters in poverty-stricken Victorian London, Dr Barnardo decided to devote himself to helping destitute children. He set up a ragged school in the East End, where poor children could go to get a basic education. Three years later he opened his first home for boys, shortly followed by the Girl's Village.

Today, the values of the work Barnardo’s do hasn’t changed. They now work directly with over 200,000 children, young people and their families every year, running vital projects all over the UK helping vulnerable children in every way possible.

Here at Giveacar we aim to raise even more vital funds for Barnardo’s . For more information about Barnardo’s you can have a read on their website. Here at Giveacar we are hoping to raise more money for Barnardo’s so they can continue the fantastic work they do. With an average scrap price of £80, one car could buy two bubble tubes for a multi-sensory room, enabling disabled children to play.
